Crowns and Bridges
Restore your smile with crown or bridge treatments.
Tidewater Dental Group offers crowns and bridges to restore teeth that have been lost or damaged and give you back your beautiful smile.
Losing a permanent tooth from decay, gum disease or accident can cause problems for the adjacent teeth. If you suffer from tooth loss, our restorative treatments can repair your smile and set a long-term solution from future damage from decay or periodontal disease.
Sometimes referred to as a “cap”, a crown fits over a carefully-prepared existing tooth that has been damaged or cannot hold any more fillings.
Types of crowns:
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns
- Full ceramic crowns
- Full gold crowns
- Partial-coverage gold or ceramic crowns
Dental bridges “bridge” the gap created by missing teeth.
A bridge consists of two crowns for the anchoring teeth on either side of the gap and a false tooth in between. These false teeth may be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination them.
Bridges can help to:
- Restore your smile
- Allow you to chew and speak better
- Maintain the shape of your face
- Help distribute your bite better by replacing missing teeth
- Prevent your remaining teeth from moving out of position
The Crown and Bridge Procedure
After taking an in-depth medical and dental history and a thorough exam with x-rays, we will schedule you for the restorative treatment.
After anesthetizing the area to be treated, the tooth is shaped to be crowned allowing space for proper fit and appearance. We will then take an impression of the area to be used for constructing the final crown or bridge. In the meantime, you will be fitted with a temporary crown or bridge to protect your teeth until the second appointment. At that time, we evaluate the customized bridge or crown for proper fit before placing it permanently. You should experience little, if any pain during or after the treatment.
Care for your new crowns or bridges as you would for your natural teeth. And avoid sticky foods like caramels, gum and taffy or hard, crunchy foods like hard candy or ice!
